 Professional Learning Communities

We want to do everthing we can to help parents understand why and when we are having late starts next year. Below you will find the dates of LPS late starts for the coming school year.
By now, we hope you have heard that we are starting late to allow our teachers time to work together in professional learning communities, or PLCs. If you are interested in learning about the work of PLCs, please  plan to come to back to school night. Dr. Oaks will offer  special sessions for anyone interested, addressing these questions:

* What is a PLC?
* We have great schools already -- why are LPS schools headed in this direction at this time?
* What are the four critical questions that PLCs are working on?
* What have PLCs accomplished already at Goddard?
* What can students and parents expect as a result of the PLC work?
* What effect will PLCs have on our school day and on the school calendar?

 District PLC
The district achievement goal states, 90 percent of all students will be on or above grade level in reading, math, writing, and science by 2011. The achievement gap in student performance will be cut in half by 2009.”  This goes hand in hand with the district’s belief that a well-rounded education is important to each student’s success.

Beginning in the fall of 2007, all LPS schools will provide time for teachers to meet together to have frequent, consistent, and data-driven conversations about student achievement. These meetings are called Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). There are 10 late-start days built into next year’s calendar that allow time for PLCs to take place.
